The mid-atlantic region
includes the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Virginia, and West Virginia.The parks in Washington DC are in the National Capital Region, while Delaware only has a portion of Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Trail. The missions of the parks in the
region include preservation of American history, and providing outstanding
recreational opportunities.
The historical parks trace the beginnings of European exploration, the
birth and westward expansion of the nation, and sites of battles during the
Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War.
Recreational
areas include outstanding beaches along the Atlantic coast, rafting,
canoeing, fishing and related outdoor activities.
